What are the next steps?

The end of a mentoring term leaves many individuals with some heavy questions...
What now?
Do we continue mentoring?
Should we continue informally?
I wonder if my mentor/mentee got anything out of our experiences together?

These questions are normal, which is why deciding the next step is one of the most important phases in mentoring...
  • it helps provide closure to both the mentor and the mentee.
  • it gives you the opportunity to show appreciation to your mentee/mentor.
  • it allows you the opportunity to meet and talk about your progress.
  • it helps to define your mentoring relationship.
  • it helps you to decide the next steps in your partnership.
We understand this phase can be difficult, so we've provided you with a 2 page "How to" handout! CLICK HERE!

What do you think of our handout? Was it helpful?

What is your Mentoring Style?

Styles of Mentoring...

Informal: Mentoring that happens by chance. No real structure or set goals.
Example- Your third grade Art teacher that helped you to believe in yourself.

Enhanced Informal: More intentional approach to mentoring that focused more on encouraging and preparation.
Example- Meeting with a more experienced colleague who assists you in preparing for a Licensure exam.

Formal: The most intentional approach where you are matched with another individual or group for the sole purpose of mentoring.
Example- Participation in the Millersville Mentoring Alliance Program.

What is your style? Did you start Formal and then shift to another style? Did you start informal and advance to formal?

Mentoring Temptations

3 Temptations of Mentoring
  1. Acting as if people are (or should be) just like you
  2. Telling people what to do
  3. Solving the problem instead of working to build the person’s competence

When in a mentoring partnership, try to stay clear of these three items. Whether you are a mentor or a mentee these items will weaken your partnership.

Review the quote below...

“While seeing others through the eyes of respect might be the first step in helping them, sometimes being seen that way is all they really need.”
~Gail Van Kleeck
